STAGE FLASH 5
Les Kolczak
5 December 2008, 4:25 pm
Day: 1 Flash No: 5 Special Stage: SS6 Myherin 2 Distance: 18.28Km
Weather: Cold, heavy rain, hail
Road Conditions: Slippery

2: Dani Sordo/Marc Marti
"It's not possible to see the road at high speed because the rain and sleet is so heavy."

6: Chris Atkinson/Stephane Prevot
"I pressed very hard this time but Jari-Matti has still taken time off us. I've got a few problems with mist on the screen, too."

4: Jari-Matti Latvala/Miika Anttila
"That was a good stage for me. I had a few problems at the start as the windscreen blower was broken."

1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena
"I had a good drive this time. There's more ice on the roads now and the water is so deep that I'm aquaplaning in places."

3: Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
"I've got a big job to do now, but I'll still try. The engine isn't pulling as it should since the roll."

5: Petter Solberg/Philip Mills
"That could have been such a good time. I was on a real charge but the last few kilometres after the watersplash were impossible, because I couldn't see anything. I'm so frustrated by that!"

7: Francois Duval/Denis Giraudet
"We spun after 3km but the car still feels fine. We were pushing quite hard."

14: Henning Solberg/Cato Menkarud
"I'm perfectly happy with that. The only trouble was that you couldn't see much after the last few kilometres."

17: Sebastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
"We had a problem at the end of the stage with the electrics and now the gearbox."

16: Conrad Rautenbach/David Senior
"I wish I was at home in South Africa - it's 35 degrees there!"

8: Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin
"The wipers are only working intermittently. There's more standing water then before."

12: Per-Gunnar Andersson/Jonas Andersson
"I have been trying harder this afternoon. The frustrating thing is that I lost five seconds on the stage before this one when the car skidded off."

11: Toni Gardemeister/Tomi Tuominen
"There's a six-inch round gap through the windscreen - the rest is mist. With that and the rain I couldn't see anything from about 8km into the stage."

18: Mads Ostberg/Ole Kristian Unnerud
"We had lots of problems in there. There was a half spin and a fogged windscreen. But we're still in there fighting."

19: Khalid Al Qassimi/Michael Orr
"That's tough and rough. Now the water is so deep it's hiding the ruts."

20: Barry Clark/Paul Nagle
"I've gone soft! I need to get back to Aberdeen and toughen up! That was just so rough."

46: Valentino Rossi/Carlo Cassina
"We've improved our time through there a lot from this morning, so I'm really pleased."

53: Giovanni Manfrinato/Carlo Pisano
"I've got a problem with the engine. All the warning lights on the centre console are on - they're glowing red it's so bad."

39: Nasser Al-Attiyah/Chris Patterson
"I broke the radiator in the watersplash the first time through here and now I just have to nurse the car through today."

55: Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson
"In this type of car there is a big problem with traction in these conditions."

146: Jari Ketomaa/Miika Teiskonen
"It looks like my fellow countryman Juho Hanninen is stuck in the watersplash."

41: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha
"Juho is stuck in the water. As we went by our engine had a big splutter, too. Still, it is going well, even though we had a big moment near the end."

23: Steve Perez/Paul Spooner
"I love it! Snow! Mud! Ice! Slippy! That's rallying! Life can be hard - you should try rallying a Stratos, then you'll know what hard is!"

24: Dave Weston/Aled Davies
"Those are worse conditions than we get back home. But it's still fun"

60: Guy Wilks/Phil Pugh
"It's still very treacherous in there, but now we're watching Flodin's times."

59: David Higgins/Ieuan Thomas
"That was much better than this morning, but it's so hard."

56: Fumio Natahara/Daniel Barritt
"That was much better. I was so much quicker this time."

42: Bernardo Sousa/Jorge Carvalho
"I'm learning so much on this rally - in fact I'm learning so much on every corner! I need to concentrate so hard."

32: Mirco Baldacci/Giovani Agnese
"I have an engine problem. Problems, problems, problems - all year problems."

55: Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson
"We lost about 6secs with a spin. Also, we have a small engine problem now."

44: Patrik Flodin/Goran Bergsten
"I'm really happy, we caught car 36 so we must be going well." (SEE QUOTE BELOW)

36: Eyvind Brynildsen/Glenn Macneal
"The rear wheel has broken. I don't recall hitting anything, but I had to crawl through the stage."

47: Jaromir Tarabus/Daniel Trunket
"It's all fine. I could do without the ice, mind."

45: Teemu Arminen/Tuomo Nikkola
"That was much better - five minutes better in fact."

37: Spyros Pavlides/Steve Lancaster
"It's warmer in Cyprus."

61: Gwyndaf Evans/Gareth Roberts
"That's so annoying. What a joke! It drowned out in the ford and I lost minutes."

72: Ryan Champion/Anders Howard
"We stopped in the ford next to Gwyndaf and lost a minute or more. I'm not really enjoying this rally yet, but there's always tomorrow."

62: Mattias Therman/Janne Perala
"There's not so much ice now, but it's more difficult because the roads are so cut up."

66: Heikki Westerlund/S Suhonen
"I'm 50 now and I can't see in the dark anymore! There are some really big rocks beginning to come through."

67: Hermann Gassner Junior/Katherina Wuestenhagen
"That was a better run, but I've got a turbo problem now. Hopefully we can fix it tonight."

64: Ari Laivola/Kari Mustalahti
"We stopped for four or five minutes in the watersplash."

68: Hugh Evans/Iestyn Williams
"Typical Wales! I'm happy to be at home playing in the mud."

69: Daniel Unger/Sebastian Itu
"You can't push too hard in these conditions - you will just destroy a Gp N car."

70: Marco Tempestini/Dorin Pulpea
"Fog, rain, snow, ice and sun - spot the odd one out!"

71: Oleksi Tamrazov/Oleksandr Skochyk
"That was cool! I enjoyed myself."

80: Steven Holder/Steve McPhee
"I'm not rallying at the moment, just surviving. The worst bits are downhill, where the four-wheel-drive boys have really cut it up."

94: Thomas Cave/Gemma Price
"There's so many cars off in there - including five or six in the watersplash. I think I gained 20 places without even trying!"

87: Tony Jardine/David Smith
"There was one car blocking the way in the water, so I had to drive up the bank to go round. It's so deep now that there are almost waves."

95: Neville Jones/Ian Capewell
"I'm glad to get through there. It's littered with cars in there - and several times we nearly joined them."

89: Gordon Nichol/Emma Morrison
"That was great. I hope we have as much fun tomorrow. The car is wandering over the road in the wet and rain, but it's mega fun."

97: David Harrison/Glyn Thomas
"There was actually loads of grip in there. We had a great run apart from one slight overshoot."

98: Darren Jones/Paul Burley
"Can we have a boat next time? The water came over the screen through the ford."

79: Andrew Hockridge/Rich Mills
The engine started to go after the watersplash. We had to get out and dry the plugs, which took about ten minutes."

85: Nathan O'Connor/Jessica Rogan
"Something fell off and flew over the bonnet in there. Also, my co-driver's loosing her voice, which serves her right for shouting at me so much."
