In 2002, the MSA launched the Marshals registration scheme (commonly called the NMR or National Marshals Register). This is a scheme whereby marshals can apply to be given a grade to recognise their experience in marshalling.

Introduction to the National Marshals Register
- The scheme has 5 grading levels; Trainee Marshal - the entry level marshal grade, Marshal and Experienced Marshal – for more experienced marshals, Senior Marshal and Event Official - for senior marshals. The criteria for gaining each grade are shown below:
Trainee Marshal – The marshal must be nominated to the National Marshals Register by an MSA recognised club. There are no experience requirements.
Marshal - Marshals must have marshalled satisfactorily on 5 events and have completed 1 training session.- Experienced Marshal - Marshals must have marshalled satisfactorily on a further 10 events (15 in total) and have attended 2 training sessions.
Senior Marshal - Marshals must have marshalled satisfactorily on a further 10 events (including 5 as a senior marshal) and have attended 2 senior training sessions.- Event Official – Marshals must have marshalled satisfactorily on a further 10 events (5 as an event official or deputy) and have attended 2 senior training sessions.

Becoming Registered on the National Marshals Register
Becoming registered on the NMR is quite straightforward providing you can be nominated by an MSA recognised club. Anyone wishing to enter the NMR as a Trainee can simply download the marshals registration form from the MSA website (http://www.msauk.org/) (needs Adobe Acrobat Reader) and get their club's chief marshal or committee to nominate them to the NMR by endorsing the form and sending it back to the address shown on the form.
If you want to marshal on Wales Rally GB you must become registered on the Marshals Registration Scheme with the MSA. We recommend you do this a few months in advance of the event to avoid any last minute licensing issues. You can still enrol with Wales Rally GB to marshal on the event beforehand but you must become a registered marshal before Wales Rally GB takes place.
