4: Jari-Matti Latvala/Miika Anttila
“I’m not sure if it’s good or bad being first car on the road. It could be either. The organisers had said the place where I went off in the first stage was tricky – and they were right! Of course I’m under pressure but I’m really pleased so far. The second run through those stages will be easier. I just need a bit more confidence in the braking areas. I feel confident, though. On the gravel the grip is good and, although it is changing all the time, the grip is overall ok. I went off 50m after a crest, went sideway and bounced back on the road. It’s so difficult. I lost time being too cautious early on. I was alittle afraid after that off but on the next run through the conditions will be equal, even if it is slippier. I am adapting all the time. In Rheola I took bigger risks than Port Talbot, but it is a bit scary going flat over crests in fifth gear and at 160kph.”
1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena
“We went off and hit the same bank as Jari-Matti in the first stage. I’m trying so hard to win. It’s so close.”
12: Per-Gunnar Andersson/Jonas Andersson
“It’s very slippy. I felt the first one went well, but I lost a lot in the second one. I’m having a good fight with Henning, but it’s going to be hard to beat him.”
14: Henning Solberg/Cato Menkarud
“I’m pushing hard. The braking points are really tricky. I don’t know where I can put the car. It’s still to play for though.”
5: Petter Solberg/Philip Mills
“We’re struggling for traction. All the improvements with the car have been made for gravel roads, not icy ones. With the leaders fighting so hard there might still be a podium for me – I feel I deserve one.”
2: Dani Sordo/Marc Marti
“I’ve been told to pick up points, not push.”
7: Francois Duval/Denis Giraudet
“The first stage was quite difficult. Maybe the sun will help the next loop, but then it might just polish the surface more.”
3: Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
“It has been difficult, as yesterday. Perhaps it is even harder to pick out the ice, especially when the sun is up. I can’t catch anyone now. I have to go fast enough to stay up, but slow enough to stay on the road. There could be a puncture ahead, so I have to keep trying. I just hope it’s not me that gets the puncture now!”
17: Sebastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
“The conditions are so hard for a driver that needs to finish! I love my job, and two offs in one weekend wouldn’t look good.”
20: Barry Clark/Paul Nagle
“The first stage was good but the second one was icier and I didn’t have confidence. It’s only my fourth event in a World Rally Car and to be this close to Matthew Wilson is encouraging. I’ll be happy to see the finish.”
11: Toni Gardemeister/Tomi Tuominen
“It’s tricky. I need more trust in the ca. I couldn’t find the grip and the brakes seemed very sudden. I’m still fighting with Duval. Anything is possible.”
19: Khalid Al Qassimi/Michael Orr
“The first stage was covered in ice and frost. In long high-speed corners we have to back off on half throttle and I’m sliding the whole time. I have to avoid losing the car completely. You can’t keep the commitment the whole time or you’ll lost it. I’ve spoken to the Welsh drivers and even they are struggling. What chance have I got?”
46: Valentino Rossi/Carlo Cassina
Awarded Spirit of Rally Award. “I’m very happy. The stages are really good today and I know I’m driving better than all rally. It’s difficult, but to reach the finish will be a real achievement.”
23: Steve Perez/Paul Spooner
“I have an oil pressure problem. It keeps dropping. It’s a great event – what rallying should be about, men and machines versus the elements. Personally i wouldn’t have cancelled the stages on day one. A Gp N car could have ended up leading – rallying’s equivalent of an FA Cup upset. It’s not good to cancel stages and try and tell the public that rally drivers can’t drive on ice. Next we’ll be cancelling stages for fog, or having tyre changes if it starts raining. It’s not F1.”
24: Dave Weston/Aled Davies “It’s alright. I hit ice on the first stage and lost a couple of minutes as I went off. Then I stalled at a hairpin in the second stage. I’m gradually gaining confidence but it takes time to do that in these conditions. Still, nothing’s hanging off the car, so that’s good.”
21: Eamonn Boland/Damien Morrissey
“I’m SupeRallying so there’s no point doing something stupid. There’s a hell of a difference between asphalt and gravel. I remember now why I gave up gravel rallying eight years ago.”
55: Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson
“The battle with Flodin is close now. I can’t do anything about the title if Aigner is running but I’m going as fast as I can and will concentrate on that.”
60: Guy Wilks/Phil Pugh
“I’ve had no dramas out there. The main thing is to finish, take the championship home and then restock for next year. There’s some things in the pipeline and not much time before the new season starts.”
41: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha
“So far, so good. I am just trying to stay on the road. I have a one minute gap to Wilks and I want to maintain that as a cushion.”
44: Patrik Flodin/Goran Bergsten
“I’ve got a few small car problems. The main one is that when I pull the handbrake the transmission cuts to two-wheel drive. That was in the second stage. It mist be a centre differential problem.”
59: David Higgins/Ieuan Thomas
“We lost the brakes in the first stage. We bled them between the stages. All in all it’s not been a good weekend. I’m looking forward to getting home and taking stock.”
146: Jari Ketomaa/Miika Teiskonen
“I’ve trouble with the rear alignment. The car is not tracking properly. All the time the car is moving about. There’s no chance to change anything so there is no fight left. I will just have to settle for my place.”
42: Bernardo Sousa/Jorge Carvalho
Car damage. “I went hit a llama in the second stage. Two came on the track, one ran and one I ran over. I hit it at 160kph in sixth gear. The first stage was better but I hit a rock and got a puncture. The spare was for the right side of the car – and of course the puncture was on the rear left.
49: Simone Campedelli/Danilo Fappani
“I’m happy. No problems. The second stage went well. It’s worth running in the event just to learn the stages, as I hope to be back in the PWRC next year. We’ve fixed the damage to the engine from the watersplash now. We broke a cross member yesterday and nearly pulled out.”
61: Gwyndaf Evans/Gareth Roberts
“I was so annoyed to lose three minutes or so in the watersplash on the first day. I was at the sharp end before that, but maybe there is a reason for these things. Since then I’ve knuckled down to get points for Mitsubishi in the BRC Manufacturers standings. The pace is ok but the conditions are as bad as I remember.”
67: Hermann Gassner Junior/Katherina Wuestenhagen
“It’s going well. The first stage was slippy and difficult and the second one was fast and slippy.”
62: Mattias Therman/Janne Perala
“That was really good. I always get out of the car with a smile on my face. I am doing this for fun. It’s my first time in Wales, first time in the WRC, first time abroad and first time not driving as a junior, so I’m delighted.”
72: Ryan Champion/Anders Howard
“It’s so slow for us. We have an ongoing misfire that we thought we’d fixed but which seems to be getting worse. Port Talbot was going well until the last corner, when we slid off and lost fourty seconds. But it’s a new car and new co-driver so overall I can’t complain.”
70: Marco Tempestini/Dorin Pulpea
“The first stage was like a skating rink. The second one was more enjoyable. I was really upset as everyone said how wonderful the start of the second stage would be but my pace was poor.”
94: Thomas Cave/Gemma Price
“It’s been a good morning. I had a clean run. I’ve no problems with the car and made no driver errors. I was maybe 10mph too quick over the jump in Port Talbot and it was quite a hard landing. But better too quick than too slow... maybe. I’m looking forward to the finish now.”
69: Daniel Unger/Sebastian Itu
“We came off yesterday so must try and stay on the road and see Cardiff.”
47: Jaromir Tarabus/Daniel Trunket
“We took the Port Talbot jump too fast and landed on our nose. We damaged the bumper but live to fight another day.”
68: Hugh Evans/Iestyn Williams
“It’s so icy and hard, but at the end of the day this is a day out of the office for me. The day I start to take it seriously is the day I should be staying in that office.”
76: Jason Pritchard/George Gwynn
“I really need to see the finish and wrap up the championship. It’s like Driving Miss Daisy we’re going so steady.”
81: Emre Yurdakul/Can Erkal
“Both me and my co-driver are losing our voices. We might have flu, so we’re off to get some medicine. Sometimes I can’t hear my co-driver’s notes.”
87: Tony Jardine/David Smith
“What a fantastic morning. We kept up our pace and we’re second in class now I think. The car ahead is fighting for the Fiesta championship and has backed off. We’re flying. We caught them on the long straight in Rheola, and it was a bit scary as we went by.”
83: Luca Griotti/Corrado Bonato
“It’s going alright today. It’s difficult with front-wheel drive but we’re having fun at last.”
75: Peter Stephenson/Kim Baker
“We’re treating this as the first day of the rally. The first stage was hard but the second one was great. This is my first time with my navigator, so we are working each other out. This afternoon should be better.”
95: Neville Jones/Ian Capewell
“Not a bad morning. It was very slippery in the first stage and we slid off in Walters Arena, which was embarrassing. There was more grip in the second stage but the conditions mean you can never be confident. If we finish it will be a job well done.”
79: Andrew Hockridge/Rich Mills
“Just going steady. There’s more pace in the car but I want to finish. The uphill hairpins are a nightmare – there’s no grip.”
84: Burcu Cetinkaya/Cicek Gumey
“The wheels just spin everywhere. I want to finish. My class rival was faster, but we are beating them now. Still, we are too far behind to catch them, which is frustrating. I will buy a new Fiesta in March for next year.”
85: Nathan O'Connor/Jessica Rogan
“We’re just going steady. In Port Talbot it was great. We pushed harder but overshot a few times. We also landed nose first after the Port Talbot jump but the car survived. We’ve enjoyed the rally so far. I’d do it again.”
89: Gordon Nichol/Emma Morrison
“We’re doing badly. On stage one we caught Nathan and the Skoda down a long straight into a hairpin. I braked nice and late like I used to in karting and overshot the corner and hit a gate. We scattered some marshals, too, but I think they were all fine. In stage two we caught Nathan again but then nosedived over the jump. We’ve had some hub problems before, so I hope I haven’t done anything to make them worse.”
97: David Harrison/Glyn Thomas
“It has been a good morning. In the first stage we had a brush with the trees and knocked the tracking out. In the second one we nosedived over the jump, so the car needs checking out.”
