STAGE FLASH 17
Les Kolczak
7 December 2008, 9:10 am
Day: 3 Flash: 17 Special Stage: SS16 Rheola 1 Distance: 27.96 Km
Weather: Cold, but dry
Road Conditions: Slippy

4: Jari-Matti Latvala/Miika Anttila
Climbed out of his car and removed his helmet and HANS device to look under the front and rear and see if there was any damage. “I had a couple of moments and went off into a soft bank. We got going again relatively quickly, but it is so difficult. In some places there is a surprising amount of grip, and in others there is none. If Seb goes faster then I couldn’t have done anything about it.”

 1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena
“The gap’s down to 2.2s now – not so bad. It’s very difficult in there. It’s frozen in some places, but the conditions are better in the middle. Maybe I lost some confidence towards the end of the stage.”

2: Dani Sordo/Marc Marti
“It was difficult in there, with some damp and slippery patches. You know what happens if you get it wrong, and I have been watching Petter’s splits. I’ve been told by the boss not to go full attack and ignore Seb’s times.”

5: Petter Solberg/Philip Mills
“It’s so difficult. It is on the limit of safety.”

12: Per-Gunnar Andersson/Jonas Andersson
“It was ok. It’s really difficult to judge where the grip is. Some places there is plenty, others there is none. I am either braking too early or too late too often. Overall, I’m just too slow. But I don’t want to take risks today.”

14: Henning Solberg/Cato Menkarud
“I’m not brave enough to push in these conditions, I need more experience. I need to know where the ice is before I can drive.”

7: Francois Duval/Denis Giraudet
“I went very slowly. It’s really slippery and so difficult, but I don’t want to take risks.”

11: Toni Gardemeister/Tomi Tuominen
“It’s most important to keep my place. It’s very difficult – I had a few Olympic moments at the start of the stage. I just need to keep my place.”

3: Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
“It’s very difficult again. I don’t have any confidence in these conditions, but there’s not much I can do about that now with just three stages to go.”

8: Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin
“In some places the surface is really shiny and there’s loads of grip, and in other places it’s really slippery. It’s hard to get any confidence or find any kind of rhythm.”

20: Barry Clark/Paul Nagle
“I’m just looking for the grip and trying to make the best of it.” Asked about whether the England v Scotland aspect of his fight with Matt Wilson was on his mind, he replied: “No comment!”

17: Sebastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
“That stage was sh*t on these tyres.”

46: Valentino Rossi/Carlo Cassina
Had lost part of his rear bumper. “It was very slippery – there is lots of ice. But the stage was nice and fast, it felt much better than before. I’m just trying to go fast without falling off.”

19: Khalid Al Qassimi/Michael Orr
“It’s icy up there. It wasn’t enjoyable at all. I had to go so cautiously that I knew the time would be slow.”

16: Conrad Rautenbach/David Senior
“Terrible. Hopeless. Pretty shi*ty everywhere.”

23: Steve Perez/Paul Spooner
“It’s like an ice rink in there, all over the place. It just goes to show how amazing these drivers are at the front, going at that speed but staying on the road. We’re just tootling along with the best of the rest, trying to enjoying ourselves.”

22: Gareth Jones/Clive Jenkins
“I think I’ve got a puncture on the left – something’s wrong as the car is pulling. The only thing consistent about the ice is that it’s always where you don’t want it!”

21: Eamonn Boland/Damien Morrissey
“Very slippy. It’s very shiny especially under the trees. I had a few hairy moments.”

44: Patrik Flodin/Goran Bergsten
Front nearside bumper damage. “Terrible, so slippery – you have grips in some corners and not in others. I had a little off into a ditch. I’m not able to recover the rhythm I lost yesterday.”

24: Dave Weston/Aled Davies
“It’s terrible out there. I slid off the road on ice and needed help from the spectators to get going again. Now I’m eager to get on.

55: Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson
“We’ve got no idea how that went. You can’t stay on line. I’m battling for the win and will push now.”

41: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha
“I think I lost a little time. It’s so slippy and tricky. Even when you drive slowly it’s difficult The more cars that run over the stage the worse the conditions get.”

60: Guy Wilks/Phil Pugh
“I think I’ve won the BRC title, yes. It’s tricky in a way. We know we only have to think about the BRC, not WRC, but you have to push a bit or you’ll lost concentration.”

59: David Higgins/Ieuan Thomas
“I’ve nothing to drive for now. I just want to finish.”

146: Jari Ketomaa/Miika Teiskonen
“It’s really shiny up there – I had some big moments. I just want to finish safely.”

 50: Armindo Araujo/Miguel Ramalho
“It’s very slippy – but quite fun.”

42: Bernardo Sousa/Jorge Carvalho
“I had a left rear puncture when I clipped a rock after Walters Arena.”

49: Simone Campedelli/Danilo Fappani
“I’m concentrating on finishing and building experience for next year now. It’s so treacherous.”

47: Jaromir Tarabus/Daniel Trunket
“Slippy, icy but no problems.”

37: Spyros Pavlides/Steve Lancaster
“It’s so treacherous. Some parts of the stage are fine, but others are cut up and icy.”

61: Gwyndaf Evans/Gareth Roberts
“It’s so slippy. Icy splippy. Slippy.”

57: Egon Kaur/Simo Koskinen
“I just have to be cautious, as I want to finish.”

72: Ryan Champion/Anders Howard
“We lost the brakes 5km from the end, it was quite scary.”

70: Marco Tempestini/Dorin Pulpea
“It was good. Well, it was a stage.”

62: Mattias Therman/Janne Perala
“I just want to finish and gain experience.”

76: Jason Pritchard/George Gwynn
“I’m trying my best, but it’s so slippery. I couldn’t find the grip.”

94: Thomas Cave/Gemma Price
“That was the longest and worst 27km of my life. Not nice!”

68: Hugh Evans/Iestyn Williams
“I hit something three-quarters of the way through. There’s some light bumper damage.”

69: Daniel Unger/Sebastian Itu
“That was very icy. Very, very, very icy. The worst stage of the event... so far.”

88: Deividas Jocius/Mindaugus Varza
“That’s the second stage in a row that I’ve been past in. Oh well.”

71: Oleksi Tamrazov/Oleksandr Skochyk
“Of course I’m enjoying it – I’m enjoying every stage finish!”

87: Tony Jardine/David Smith
“I’m second in class now I think, as I took two minutes off the car in front in there.”

81: Emre Yurdakul/Can Erkal
“I’m still here.”

80: Steven Holder/Steve McPhee
“I’ve no idea how to drive in tehse conditions. I’ve switched the anti-lag off as it just makes the car harder to drive. I’m on the same tyres I started the rally with they’ve had so little use.”

95: Neville Jones/Ian Capewell
“I went off twice in there. Once in front of all the spectators in Walters Arena and another time at a triple caution that I had marked. I knew it was coming, but the car just wanted to go straight on.”

83: Luca Griotti/Corrado Bonato
“I’ve got front-wheel drive only. The wheels are spinning everywhere.”

75: Peter Stephenson/Kim Baker
“The downhill sections are so scary. I’ve also got a slight gearchange problem.”

79: Andrew Hockridge/Rich Mills
“There’s no grip at all, so you just do your best.”

84: Burcu Cetinkaya/Cicek Gumey
“Very bad. No grip. So hard.”

89: Gordon Nichol/Emma Morrison
“It’s really difficult, but we can’t be going that slowly as we caught two cars in there. I even had a huge lock-up at a hairpin right.”

85: Nathan O'Connor/Jessica Rogan
“The intercom went two miles into that one. At least the gearbox is fixed now, after yesterday’s problems.”

97: David Harrison/Glyn Thomas
“We hit a bank on the outside of a corner and may have damaged the steering.”

98: Darren Jones/Paul Burley
“It’s really icy, but not cutting up too much. The notes are cautious in the hairpins, but I’m still having trouble getting round them!”

203
“I had a seriously f-ing big moment in there on ice. It’s the most frightening moment of my life. Deeply scary.”

206
Car is stopped in styage after hitting a tree. The crew are okay.

201
“What a nightmare. We were warned about the ice but we didn’t expect so much so soon.”

205
“That was awesome – in a horrendous way. I laughed the whole way round.”

204
Driver: “That was horrendous.” Co-driver: “No, it was awesome. I laughed at you the whole way round.”
