STAGE FLASH 9
Les Kolczak
6 December 2008, 11:00 am
Day: 2 Flash No: 9 Special Stage: SS10 Halfway 1 Distance: 18.57Km
Weather: Cold, but dry
Road Conditions: Ice patches

4: Jari-Matti Latvala/Miika Anttila
“It’s very difficult in there – I’m surprised by how icy it still is. I don’t really have a gameplan – I just have to drive as best I can and see what happens. Being first on the road means there’s no lines to follow, so I just have to do my own thing.”

1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena
“It’s so slippery in there, with frozen surfaces everywhere. You never know where the grip is, so you have to be careful. We have to take it easy and think of the Manufacturers’ title, but it’s difficult to concentrate properly if you don’t push to a certain degree.”

12: Per-Gunnar Andersson/Jonas Andersson
“It’s more difficult in there than I thought it would be. Because the sun is out it gives you a sense of security, but the grip’s not there. Hopefully the conditions will improve during the day and we can go faster later on.”

18: Mads Ostberg/Ole Kristian Unnerud
“It hasn’t been so good this morning. We had a problem with the fuel injection system this morning on the first stage. Now, getting the balance right on the ice is proving hard.”

5: Petter Solberg/Philip Mills
“I’m not happy with that time at all. I feel that the car is struggling. Maybe we can do something more this afternoon.”

2: Dani Sordo/Marc Marti
“I was very careful on that one as it was extremely slippery. Also, there were some rocks on the edges, so it was better to be careful. There is a thin layer of ice on the top of the track and we have to think about the Manufacturers’ Championship.”

3: Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
“It’s a good morning, and the sun is melting the top layer of ice. However, there’s still a layer of ice underneath, so it’s still very slippery.”

11: Toni Gardemeister/Tomi Tuominen
“I didn’t go so well as on the first stage. I expected it to be more slippery so I didn’t go hard. It’s still icy in places, and so easy to make a mistake. I need to go a little better.”

20: Barry Clark/Paul Nagle
“I had an off at the crossroads. I went over the hill and hit the next crest and ran wide at the crossroads. It’s a lot slippier in there than in the first stage. I’m not sure where to put the car to find the grip. Also, there are rocks at the side of the road.”

8: Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin
“I’m not happy with that time. It’s icy and harder than the last one. I’m not sure where to find the grip. This really isn’t a normal Rally GB.”

16: Conrad Rautenbach/David Senior
“On the first stage today we went off, and then I had a funny feeling with the brakes in that one.”

22: Gareth Jones/Clive Jenkins
Minor damage on front and rear. No comment.

19: Khalid Al Qassimi/Michael Orr
“The surface is still totally frozen. The first 2km are good and after that it’s ice. I’m just keeping out of trouble.”

23: Steve Perez/Paul Spooner
“I went off. I hit some ice and it took the car into a bush.”

24: Dave Weston/Aled Davies
“I hit a rock early in the stage and bent something at the front left. It was a substantial boulder on the inside of the corner which I hooked. I’ll have to have a good look under the car and see what the damage is.”

21: Eamonn Boland/Damien Morrissey
“It’s so slippery, especially under the trees where there’s no sun. All in all it’s much better than yesterday, which was a disaster for us.”

60: Guy Wilks/Phil Pugh
“I’ve had a turbo pipe go about halfway through that stage, just after Dixies, so I lost about 1m15s. The clutch is also a bit dodgy.” Wilks has pulled up after the stage and is currently working on the car.

44: Patrik Flodin/Goran Bergsten
“The first stage was much easier than this one. It was very slippery and very wet. As it’s wide and fast in there you must be on the line, and if you lose it, then it’s hard to get back on it. I also had to pass Guy Wilks in there, which I’m sure cost me time.”

41: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha
“The low sun is a real problem, especially coming out of the trees. I can’t find the grip, either. It has to get better this afternoon.”
