Weather: Cold
Road Conditions: Ice patches
1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena
“It started off okay for the last 15km but I had a big moment. The car was completely sideways. It was very close to an accident near the end. After that I had to back off. It's so hard to read the road and know exactly where the ice is.”
2: Dani Sordo/Marc Marti
“Those were very, very bad conditions. I am very happy with the car but it's hard to go fast in these conditions. You just can't read the road or see where the ice is.”
3: Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
“I was very cautious because it's so unpredictable in there. I could see Loeb's lines and just backed off a bit. I was maybe too cautious, but it's hard to get confidence when the road is like that.”
4: Jari-Matti Latvala/Miika Anttila
“I'm starting to find the confidence. The first stage was very difficult, but the conditions at the end of the stage were very hard. There's a section of ice. We know there is ice there, but you don't know exactly where it is. It's so hard to be confident.”
5: Petter Solberg/Philip Mills
“I was a little too careful at the end, but there is more to come from me and the car. I have to say it's really treacherous conditions.”
6: Chris Atkinson/Stephane Prevot
“There's a bit of ice and I was quite fortunate in there. We were a little slow, but I know why. It's building to be an interesting weekend.”
7: Francois Duval/Denis Giraudet
“That was very, very dangerous in there, especially the last 4km.”
8: Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin
“I was just too cautious in there. There wasn't as much ice as we thought. I am getting lots of wheelspin, so maybe we can make some changes to improve that in service.”
11: Toni Gardemeister/Tomi Tuominen
“I was probably too careful, but you have to survive.” Evidence of minor damage on rear left of car.
12: Per-Gunnar Andersson/Jonas Andersson
“It was mega slippery in there. I could see in places where the drivers ahead had almost been in ditches, and that doesn't inspire confidence.”
14: Henning Solberg/Cato Menkarud
“I have a little bit of a gearbox problem. I can't use the handbrake properly and that makes it very hard to drive. I don't think it is something they can fix in service.”
16: Conrad Rautenbach/David Senior
“That was a very slow time because I had a right rear puncture. One the tyre had gone the car was stepping out every time I braked.””
17: Sebastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
“For sure, it's a dream start to be leading the rally now. I had a good feeling with this car from the first kilometre I drove it, so that's great, but there is a long way to go.”
18: Mads Ostberg/Ole Kristian Unnerud
“We've been very lucky, because our pre-event test for this event was in full snow! We've had problems with the differential on this car all season, but we seem to be getting there now.”
19: Khalid Al Qassimi/Michael Orr
“I have no confidence in the car. I can't say I'm enjoying this.”
20: Barry Clark/Paul Nagle
“I've just enjoying every second, so I want to get to the end. I may be from Aberdeen but it's a long time since I saw conditions like this!”
21: Eamonn Boland/Damien Morrissey
Arrived at stage finish with front right puncture and front right wing damage. Suspension may be damaged too.
22: Gareth Jones/Clive Jenkins
“I had a 180 degree spin near the end, but didn't damage anything.”
23: Steve Perez/Paul Spooner
“Coming from the northern hemisphere is a big help! People form Derbyshire are quite used to a bit of ice and snow!”
24: Dave Weston/Aled Davies
“It's really icy out there, but I've rallied in worse to be honest. It's not so bad.”
32: Mirco Baldacci/Giovani Agnese
“Those last 2km are just unbelievable. At least we will know what to expect for the next tiem through.”
33: Martin Prokop/Jam Tomanek “It will be difficult to win here in Britain as the wildcard entries from Britain are excellent in Wales.”
35: Evegny Novikov/Dale Moscatt
“We've got over the disappointment of Rally Japan, and now we just want to finish here.”
46: Valentino Rossi/Carlo Cassina
“It's just unbelievable! There's lots of ice, but, hey, it's still fun! It's the worst rally conditions I've ever driven in... so far!”
41: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha
“Juha (Hanninen) let me by in there, which was very fair. He obviously has a problem. I'm pushing hard now.”
42: Bernardo Sousa/Jorge Carvalho
“My shoulder is bearing up. I'm just taking things steady at the moment.”
50: Armindo Araujo/Miguel Ramalho
“I'm having a very bad day. The car stopped in a watersplash and I lost about three minutes.”
52: Juho Hanninen/Mikko Markkula
“A driveshaft has gone at the back – I'm not sure which one though. I'm not sure if we'll be able to fix it at service.”
55: Patrik Sandell/Emil Axelsson “Near the end it was very slippery, but overall it's been good.”
56: Fumio Natahara/Daniel Barritt
“I'm just trying to stay on the road, nothing else.”
39: Nasser Al-Attiyah/Chris Patterson
“Wilks almost caught me. About 5km the engine temperature shot up, and now I think there might be some damage.”
59: David Higgins/Ieuan Thomas
“I saw the 'OK' board for Mark. The car is a long way off, but there are a lot of people there helping so maybe he can get going again.”
60: Guy Wilks/Phil Pugh
“It's very treacherous for the last 2.5km of that stage. I saw Mark (Higgins) off about 1: Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena.5km from the end. The car was on its wheels so I hope they are okay. The championship's not over by a long way though. There's so far still to go.”
146: Jari Ketomaa/Miika Teiskonen
“I can't tell what is ice and what is gravel. It's scary.”
The stage was stopped after car 50 so that an ambulance could attend to someone who had been hit by a flying stone.
61: Gwyndaf Evans/Gareth Roberts
“It's interesting in there, I suppose.”
44: Patrik Flodin/Goran Bergsten
“It's not very nice to drive in those conditions. You have to be so alert on the ice, but some stretches the conditions allow you to have fun.”
36: Eyvind Brynildsen/Glenn Macneal
“I was surprised by how deep the watersplash was, but the conditions elsewhere are like Norway.
72: Ryan Champion/Anders Howard
“I had a huge spin where Mark went off. I haven't had time to think about teh fact this is a new car, co-driver – everything.”
57: Egon Kaur/Simo Koskinen
“We stopped after the watersplash as the engine cut out. I took the filters off and now it seems okay.”
45: Teemu Arminen/Tuomo Nikkola
“That was absolutely mad. We seemed to be off everywhere.”
68: Hugh Evans/Iestyn Williams.
“We got through, and that's all I can ask for.”
76: Jason Pritchard/George Gwynn
“We stopped after the watersplash – there were six of us there! But we got going again and here we are!”
77: James Smith/Simon Wallis
Crossed finish line on fire. Clutch suspected. Car now sat in pool of extinguisher fluid and looks likely to have retired for today.
71: Oleksi Tamrazov/Oleksandr Skochyk
“I'm not confident on ice, as we don't get much at home. We retired on SS1 last year, so at least it's better than that. I've bent a front left wheel rim in there.”
69: Daniel Unger/Sebastian Itu
We caught car 68with 2km to go.”
62: Mattias Therman/Janne Perala
“It's good fun despite the ice. Normally I have studs in my tyres when there's ice!”
66: Heikki Westerlund/S Suhonen
“This is my first time on Rally GB, and so far I'm pleased.”
65: Brian O'Mahoney/John Higgins
“I've got too much wheelspin. I can't get the power down.”
67: Hermann Gassner Junior/Katherina Wuestenhagen “This is my first WRC event and first big gravel rally. It's going okay.
