Jari-Matti Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila in their Ford Fiesta WRC are now leading Frenchman Sebastien Loeb and his Monaco co-driver Daniel Elena by 6.1 seconds.
The Finnish team took the lead after special stage 15 (Hafren).
Latvala said: "It is a tight situation. I was pushing hard on that stage - it is completely different from how it was this morning. We had so much massive rain last night which made the gravel wet under this morning but now it is dry it is impossible to get grip."
Loeb, yesterday crowned World Rally Champion, driving a Citroen DS3 WRC, said: "It was very hard, so slippery and I have absolutely no grip. No way could I have gone any quicker."
Norwegian Mads Ostberg and co-driver Jonas Andersson from Sweden, is currently in third place but concerns about an internal water leak and therefore the reliablity of the engine of his Ford Fiesta WRC require him to conserve it over Sunday's six final stages.
He said, "I don't know about the engine - it seems OK so long as I use high revs. I won't stop it or switch it off as Im not sure I can start it again. Maybe I leave it running in Park Ferme all night!"
Ostberg will start Sunday's fourth and final day 2.51 seconds ahead of fellow countryman Henning Solberg, also in a Ford Fiesta WRC.
Henning said, "I am happy and the car is working. I love this rally."

A selection of driver quotes from Saturday:
Jari-Matti Latvala (FIN) / Mikka Anttila (FIN) - Ford Fiesta RS WRC
Going really well, I need to wake up with a clear head in the morning. I have good confidence, I am so hungry for victory.
Ken Block (USA) / Alex Gelsomino (USA) - Ford Fiesta RS WRC
Grip is constantly changing. It's a huge experience for me and the tyres are starting to go now. The stages out here are amazing - very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to a Sunday drive tomorrow.
Craig Breen (IRL) / Gareth Roberts (GBR) - Ford Fiesta R2
I'm really pleased how this has ended up at the end of the year. I've had no big accidents and I've always been on the pace. To come here and develop over the last few year and even to be able to compete at this level is amazing. It emphasises that I can compete over a full distance in a World Rally Round and I'm not just a one stage hero. G Roberts: It's great to bring the battle into wales and its unbelievable to only be driving rally cars for 2 years.
Matthew Wilson (GBR) / Scott Martin (GBR) - Ford Fiesta RS WRC
That one wasn't too bad but we had a terrible run through Hafren. The conditions are a lot worse. The difference in the stage was massive - I may have just thrown all the notes away it was impossible to drive it fast.
Daniel Oliveira (BRA) / Fernando Mussano (ARG) - MINI John Cooper Works
We went off and I dont know what happened - think I broke a propshaft
Ott Tänak (EST) / Kuldar Sikk (EST) - Ford Fiesta RS WRC
We had a problem on the last stage which took some time to fix but the car is OK now. It's like skating in there.
And from the National Rally...
Jamie Anderson (GBR) / Ella Flynn (GBR) - Mitusbishi Lancer Evolution IX
That was fast! It's been good, we've not really done long stages before. It's been hard to keep concentration for that long! It was only a test out for us and we're happy with how we performed.
Nick Elliott (GBR) / Dave Price (GBR) - Ford Escort Mk II
That jump will have been entertaining, probably a bit too fast and the navigator said that was a comedy stage - that was pure fun.
Ieuan Rowlands (GBR) / Emyr Hall (GBR) - Ford Escort
That was a bit scary, we went over the spectator hump and I'm sure they've put a meter of gravel on it as we came down with a fair thump! But we got away with it.
John Morrison (GBR) / Peter Carstairs (GBR) - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX
We had to be pushed to the time card point as our clutch has gone. It went on the first stage today and that was hard. We had to make sure we got every hairpin right, otherwise we were in big trouble. If that hadn't happened, we could could have had a big push.
Dave Nutt (GBR) / Steve Greenhill (GBR) - Ford Focus
We had a big landing on Sweet Lamb, so we've had no turbo boost and it's only revving to 4000. It's the slowest stage I've ever done. At one point there was a bloke pushing a buggy past us up a hill!
